Fort & Pettah — Street Food and Market Eats

The Fort and Pettah areas are where Colombo's street food culture is most alive. Head to Chatham Street for short eats — pastries, rolls, and cutlets — sold by weight at local bakeries. The Old Dutch Hospital has a more polished selection of cafes and restaurants in a heritage setting, including the Ministry of Crab group's restaurants.

Galle Face & Kollupitiya (Colombo 3) — All-Rounders

This stretch of Galle Road offers the widest variety. Cafe Majestic City is a local favourite for Sri Lankan rice and curry. The Kingsbury and Galle Face Hotel both have restaurants with Indian Ocean views. For something more casual, the Galle Face Green vendors are a must in the evening.

Colombo 7 — Cinnamon Gardens — Neighbourhood Gems

The upscale residential streets around Cinnamon Gardens hide some excellent restaurants. Slightly south of Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya has a concentration of affordable, excellent local restaurants catering more to residents than tourists. This is a good area to find a genuine rice and curry lunch for under LKR 500.

Havelock Town (Colombo 5) — Trendy Cafes

Havelock Town has become the neighbourhood of choice for Colombo's café culture. Small-batch coffee shops, brunch spots, and international restaurants have opened up along Havelock Road and the surrounding streets. If you're looking for good espresso and avocado toast alongside a Sri Lankan breakfast spread, this is where to come.

Mount Lavinia — Seafood

The beach strip at Mount Lavinia is lined with seafood restaurants. The seafood here is fresh, the prices are reasonable, and eating within earshot of the ocean is an experience in itself. The Mount Lavinia Hotel's terrace restaurant is a reliable choice for a slightly more formal seafood dinner.
