Best Neighbourhoods to Stay in Colombo

Colombo's numbered districts each have a different character. Choosing the right one makes a significant difference to your experience.

Colombo 3 — Kollupitiya (Best for First-Timers)

Kollupitiya sits along Galle Road, the main artery running south from the Fort. It's central, well-served by restaurants and cafes, and within walking distance of Galle Face Green. Most international hotel brands and a good selection of mid-range options are based here. If this is your first visit and you want to be in the thick of things without venturing too far, stay in Colombo 3.

Colombo 7 — Cinnamon Gardens (Best for a Quiet, Upscale Stay)

Named for the cinnamon plantations that once grew here, Cinnamon Gardens is Colombo's most prestigious residential neighbourhood. Tree-lined streets, the Viharamahadevi Park, the National Museum, and several embassies give the area a calm, leafy feel. Several boutique hotels and guesthouses operate out of colonial-era bungalows here. Ideal for travellers who prefer space and quiet over being at the centre of the action.

Colombo 1 — Fort (Best for Business Travellers)

Fort is the old commercial heart of Colombo and home to the city's main railway station and many government buildings. A number of major hotels are based here, and the Dutch Hospital dining precinct is a walkable attraction. The area is busy during the day and quieter at night. Good transport links make it a practical base for meetings around the city.

Colombo 2 — Slave Island (Best for Budget Travellers)

Despite the name, Slave Island (also called Kompañña Veediya) is a perfectly safe and increasingly trendy neighbourhood. It borders Beira Lake and has some of the best-value guesthouses and small hotels in the city. Several decent cafes and local eateries have opened here in recent years.

Mount Lavinia (Best for Beach Access)

Technically outside the Colombo city limits, Mount Lavinia is popular with visitors who want beach access alongside city proximity. The commute into central Colombo is easy — about 20 minutes by tuk-tuk or taxi. Good for those splitting their time between the city and the coast.
